Basic battery maintenance

Battery maintenance involves charging correctly, maintaining the correct water levels and getting your batteries serviced on a regular basis.

Charging

• Batteries should only be charged when necessary, but should also not be left to discharge too much before recharging, as this will also shorten their lifespan.
• In addition a battery shouldn’t be removed from the charger until it is fully recharged.
• It is useful to keep a charge log in order to keep track of when your batteries need charging and to help you plan head for recharging time.

Water levels

• Keeping water levels at the correct level is an important part of battery maintenance
• If the active material in the battery plates dries out it becomes inactive – this can’t be reversed and so battery capacity is then permanently lost.
• Over topping can cause corrosion, because of the sulphuric acid in the mix, so should also be avoided.

Regular servicing

• Getting batteries serviced on a regular basis ensures that any problems are picked up and dealt with before they cause any permanent damage.
• Undetected problems could shorten the lifespan of your battery as well as pose health and safety hazards.
